When you're doing a value study, you're basically breaking that nine value scale into thirds. So your dark value would be 9, 8, 7 and then the middle honk and then the lighter values in. And what happens is people get timid when it comes to the paint and they kind of start hedging their bets. They tend to stay away from the dark darks even though they were very bold about using them with their values.
