We don't know exactly the relationship with cognitive development, but archaeologists who look at this period see the use of tools and the use of red ochre as sort of coming in at the same time. What's so fascinating is that you see it kind of the world over different cultures in very different places in the world are making use of red pigments to decorate their spaces. The idea of being connected to the landscape is important in such civilisations.
