i felt like there's all this stuff sort of rumbling underneath the surface of american culture. And i wanted to pack it all into that book, and in the time it took me to write it and then get it published, just blew up in this enormous way. So subtext becomes taxed. But luckily, these things are all a pendulum,. so maybe if someone reads that book now, or watches the h b o series on that book, they'll meet it at a different place than either were where you were writing it or when it was published. Yet.
