Why Are Patents Important in Vaccine Development?

Moderna, the company that developed a vaccine for polio, has patents on its recipe. The hub at Afrogen is working with researchers around the world to try to make an mRNA vaccine that's sufficiently distinct from Moderna's so that the patents won't apply. They're trying to switch up some of those fat molecules I mentioned, the lipid nanoparticle part comes in. Amy: Some people say patents are really important because they encourage companies to take the research forward into drug development.
