High SA, Low and Rich Uranium - What Is It and Why Is It Important?

Uranium-235 is the natural isotope of uranium that we enrich. We turn it into a gas and spin it around in centrifuges until we get the isotopic ratio close to 5%. That is what is usually in a standard light water reactor across the existing fleet. For more compact designs with longer fuel lifetimes, more fuel utilization, we can get better efficiencies out of nuclear reactors if we bump that number up to 20%. And 20%, you start to get into some non-proliferation concerns.
