The Role of the Jolly Roger in Pirate Ship Governance
Some pirate ships in the 70s and 80s operated according to egalitarian principles. They were, broadly speaking, I suppose, quite democratic. The ships of the line, the merchant ships, were run with extreme brutality. There was an enormous amount of resentment among ordinary seamen towards captains in the merchant ships.
