The Old English Ashe
The old english ash was a ligature of the letters a and e. It represented a sound distinct from that of either a or e. Ashe was the name of the on that represented this sound in the fu thork. Thefu thork was the runic alphabet used by the anglo saxons before adapting the latin alphabet to write old english. Ash looked a little bit like the letter f, with the right word facing parallel lines slanting downward at forty five degree angles.
