Why We Overlooked Them for So Long

The once maligned medicinal leech was back in favour and has been used in hospitals the world over ever since. When a skin flap or tissue transfer looks like it's going to fail, microsurgeons turn to the leech. In 2004 America's Food and Drug Administration declared them a medical device. Dr Catherine Woods is a historian of 18th century medicine at Goldsmiths University. She says some traditional and herbal remedies did have healing properties. But they were often considerably worse than those created by people derided as quacks.
