The History of the Penny Press
In 1833, the New York Daily Sun started selling for one penny on the street corner instead of selling for a weekly or monthly subscription cost. The class distinctions that were very rigid in the beginning of the American experience were no longer there. And so you suddenly have this mass communication that could reach a larger audience and therefore the actual topics that were covered would change as well.
