The Life Scientific

CHAPTER

Judith Mumbler, PhD in Geology and Geophysics at Durham

Judith Mumbler spent time on the Hebridean island of Rum as an undergraduate student. While there she met geophist Dan McKenzie and decided to do her PhD in Turkey. Her field area was 300 square kilometers of western Turkey around a small town called Kula. It's a volcanic province with about 80 small volcanic cones and relatively recent lava flows. The weathered lava flows, which are up to 2 million years old, are a very fertile region.
