The Evolution of Language

Neanderthals had the FoxP2 gene that enables language, do we know what they did with it? I doubt myself personally that they had the complex language we're using now. There's evidence from Africa that modern humans were communicating in more complex ways probably 100,000 years ago. We start to see a beginning of complexity there which we don't at that time find in the Neanderthals. They do get more complex at the end of their time.
