The Brennan Doctrine and Naked Lunch

Naked Lunch was ruled obscene and therefore censored in the United States when publishers first brought it there. Burroughs' publisher made an appeal and that appeal went to the Massachusetts Supreme Court, the state Supreme Court. The court decided Naked Lunch was genuine art that had redeeming social importance. It became a classic of the American literary avant-garde of the 20th century.
