The letters exchanged between augustine and jerome are fascinating. In the first one, augustine writes: I would be very surprised if anything could still be found in the hebrew texts which had escaped the notice of all those trans tors who were such experts in that language. It was far safer for augustine to keep the status quo, a standard text and a unified church. For him, the concern centers primarily on church authority and only secondarily on textual authority.
