In 1929, Henry Ford was probably one of the most famous men on the planet. He often said he planned to live to the age of 150 thanks to a diet that included obscene amounts of carrot juice and absolutely no beef. In 1919, Pennsylvania steelworkers were still grinding for 12 hours a day, six days a week. The old industrial norms of 10 and 12-hour days were being chipped away and eroded by the patient tides of progress.
