Special: Becoming A Minister Part 1 – The first day

Inside Briefing with the Institute for Government

The Experience of a Minister

Every Minister has a story of when they were first appointed, some funnier than others. Chancellor Philip Hammond remembered being on a train and not being able to get through to number 10 over and over as they tried to offer him a job. Former Minister David Gork also remembered waiting all day during a reshuffle to get that job offer. We also heard from former Minister Margo James who ran into the loo in the old town hall to take the call when it came through. It really demonstrates just how much they're at the whims of the PM,. Whether they've just entered office after a general election or whether they're in the middle of a surprise reshuffle.
