Shakespeare Wasn't Illiterate
Even the staunchest Shakespeare deniers don't deny that he was an actor. To be a performer in one of those productions you needed to be able to read. He owned no books at the time of his death had no collections of letters and left his daughters illiterate. The multiple spellings of his name doesn't really prove anything, as everyone from the 1600s and late 1500s spelt their names differently.
