Git was designed as a ditributed version control system, which means that everybody has their own copy of the repository. But git is growing in scale to a part where it wasn't designed. So we need to do a lot of interesting things to make sure that git works at that scale. The start of now is called gittits partial clone feature, wich allows you to get some one-to-one copies of every file in the entire history.
