What's the Social Context of Recreational Camping?

In the late nineteenth century, recreational campers were largely white Americans who had leisure time. They wanted to get out of the city and reconnect with the land in this kind of broader social context. But they also saw themselves as being at risk from what was seen as a tramp problem: people camping for fun but not making it. So you've got these ili, you know, recreational camphers out there in playing in nature. And then you have these folks who are just trying to kind of make it.
