The government would invest $4 billion upfront. That's twice the average R&D cost to bring a new drug to market. The company that successfully develops a safe and effective weight loss drug would be required by contract to sell the medication back to the government for let's say $40 per dose, which is essentially $2,000 per patient per year. By providing the drug to more than half a bowl of these individuals, the program would reduce medical expenses in the United States by up to $130 billion annually.
