Marius, who took the consulship as the first new man to do so in some 30 years, also snatched control of the war effort out of the hands of metellus. It was a volunteer, citizen army, and the poor and destitute were disqualified. But marius again breaks the rules - he decides to recruit them. And the response is overwhelming. Marius gets double the number of volunteers he was hope for. He chows the senate. The drag net was slowly closing around ugertha, but he kept slipping through the cracks. And the way the romans got him in the end was by getting his friends to betray him.
