i always felt like i was probably a bit of a freak, i didn't have maternal instincts. And an i knod, i discovered that females aren't born with a mythical maternal instinct. Being a mother's really difficult, and there's a lot to learn. Some mothers will be better than others. The first born is 60 % more likely to die than subsequent offspring. It's not a maternal instinct that we're born with. It's a parental instinct that needs to get triggered.

Since Charles Darwin, evolutionary biologists have been convinced that the males of the animal kingdom are the interesting ones dominating and promiscuous, while females are dull, passive, and devoted. In her new book Bitch, Cooke tells a new story. Whether investigating same — sex female albatross couples that raise chicks, murderous mother meerkats, or the titanic battle of the sexes waged by ducks, Cooke shows us a new evolutionary biology, one where females can be as dynamic as males.
