At the end of the 1960s, Synonon had fully crossed the bridge from New Age addiction treatment program to cult. Dederick and his elders would instigate arbitrary new rules such as the 24-hour day. Glut raids were routinely run on residents' rooms to confiscate excessive personal possessions. Charles Alverson was a novelist and journalist who spent six months living at a Synonon center.
