Some viruses appear to actually affect the receptors themselves. Once that base gets disrupted, then you have olfactory receptors that turn over. Receptors have a short life span. They regenerate continuously throughout life. If if the architecture isn't there to help them regenerate, then you're going to have a loss. And so that's the current man hypothesis of how covid is disrupting the old factory system.
