In his new book, The Death and Life of Walter Cronkite, Cronkite talks about the corrosive power of self-questioning. He argues that some people take pleasure in positioning themselves as superior to other people. And he says we need an antagonistic force or something to struggle against when it comes to our own society. But this bleeds over into a negative attitude toward one's own society, which is traditionally connected to religious extremism.
