Introduction

This chapter explores the symbolic importance of Hypatia's murder in illustrating the decline of the Western Roman Imperium and provides an accurate account of her life, death, and the events in Alexandria at that time. It also hints at the relevance of Hypatia and the events in late Antique Alexandria for understanding esotericism in this period.
