The Underestimation of the American Army

The American army had suffered quite considerable losses, break out from Normandy. So in the Ardennes area, there were a number of American divisions recuperating and being re-equipped over the winter. And it was felt that the Ardennes would be a good place to sort of work them up so they were ready for combat. Hitler thought if he caught that combination of slightly worn out divisions and green divisions, that they would fold. The Americans created battle groups which delayed the Germans long enough for reinforcements to arrive.
