Ruth Wilson has not rehearsed with or even met any of the actors, screened and auditioned by the theatre. The scene is lifted from the fictional play in the John Cassavette's film Opening Night released 1977. Alongside the stage, cameras are used to project close-ups on screen, allowing the audience in real time to read even micro-flickers of emotion in the actor's expressions. It really shows how different men interpret masculinity and how they feel they need to perform their masculinity, another Marty said afterwards. She wants them challenged, not panned to or spoon fed.
