Austrian economics is the continuation of a tradition that it goes back to the ancient Greeks. Karl Menger invented marginal analysis in 1871, 150 years ago. The key thing that marginal analysis helps us solve is what is called the water diamond paradox. We all need water and yet water is dirt cheap; diamonds are extremely superfluous.
