The number you're rolling against is either a number derived by the game master who could be rolling an opposed role for a creature. There's also this ladder of results that have words associated with them. So if something is easy, you're shooting for like a zero or a negative one. But it goes up to like Godlike difficulty, which might be like a plus eight. If you're really, really great at something and you roll really, really well, you can get there.
