An illiterate weaver named James Hargreaves figured out how to do it. He got the idea when he saw a traditional spinning wheel that had been turned over on the floor. Within 20 years, there were about 20,000 of these engines across Britain. The price of yarn fell sharply, angering spinners in his community.
