The Origin of the Problem of Design in Inclusive Fitness Theory
The idea that the individual is some kind of fitness calculator, balancing its genetic, it's not helpful. The cell is responding to its local environment in ways that were that were that evolved by individual level selection. Social insect colonies deserve to be called superorganisms. If you want to study them with the colony as the unit of functional organization, then you do functional analysis. And then the individual is taking part in that economy of the functional whole.
