The Valley of the Ferns

Dan materializes in a valley of ferns where the trees are stripped bare. The air is thick with dust and smoke, somewhere nearby a fire burns. He scrabble around on the ground below the tree looking for an opening to some underground chamber. All he finds are roots and soil - then without warning,. the ground gives way. A wound opens under my feet. A deep, cold grave. Nying next to me in the grave is the body of a young woman. Her hands clasped together across her abdomen. Beneath him a book. My journal.
