The History of the English in the Lesser Antilles

The colonies were fairly rapidly populated. The companies that obtained charters in england were able to send large numbers of settlers. And these indentured servants were mainly english. But then, as the century went on, increasingly irish, impoverished, irish peasants and convicts or captured rebels. There was sometimes resistance, work stoppages. And also, particularly a maronage,. what the french would call maronage, abandonment. In this early period when you had these small colonies being set up in this massive island chain, the most obvious thing to do if you didn't like the conditions you were being subject to was to run away.
