With trauma, with things that are very disturbing to you, the hippocampus doesn't work as well. We secrete epinephrine, adrenaline, noradrenaline cortisol in our system and that paralyzes the hippocampus. And then what we're left with is amygdala only processing. But because the amygdala has no sense of time, sometimes when we bring that awareness to that event, it doesn't feel like it's coming from the past. It still feels like it's happening today. So it's really important to go back and show that child in you that's still there," she says.
