Bert's sister Edma encouraged her to delay getting married. She later destroyed much of her work from before 18 69, so if there are pictures that she made of her sister before this point, they did not survive. The franco prussian war started in 18 70, and paris was under siege from september nineteenth of 1870 to january 18 71. By January the moristeaus had to eat only crackers for days.
