The Origins of Uncle Sam

There are references to an uncle Sam going all the way back to the Revolutionary War. There's a connection between food in those early years as someone who's providing food for the troops. But then yeah, Nast comes into the picture here and people originally said you know was Thomas Nast who codified uncle Sam or invented uncle Sam.
