The University of Michigan Land Grant
Treaty of Fort Miggs was signed between the United States and various Native American tribes. Among its provisions was seating of 1920 acres of land by the Chippewa, Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes to the College of Detroit for either use or sale in University of Michigan. The university later sued in 1971 by the descendants of the tribes who claimed that the land grant should have been held in a trust with the proceeds used to provide for their education. But courts ruled in favor of the university saying that this land was given as a gift by the generous NativeAmerican tribes. And so they got nothing.
