Fiorello LaGuardia was mayor of New York City from 1934 to 1945. A tattered old woman was brought before him, charged with stealing a loaf of bread. He said she has to be punished so that we teach other people around here a lesson. The following day, the New York City newspaper reported that forty-seven dollars and fifty cents was turned over to her.
