The choices you make early on can define the rest of your life's trajectory. If at age 16, you learn coding in C and by 26, C is like a dead language, then there's still time to switch. For me personally, I had a very difficult and in my own head, brave leap that I had to take relevant to our discussion. Most of my life I've programmed in C and C++.
