In 1839, James Brooke bought a naval vessel that is still part of the Navy. Because of what this vessel is, he retains the right to represent himself as almost like a naval national guard sort of thing. He arrived in Sarawak ruled over by the Sultan of Brunei and decided to fire cannons wildly into the air on his first day at sea. This was how brook decided he was going to signal his peaceful intentions to the locals. It makes it clear that if you fuck with this guy, he's got some shit.
