CHAPTER

The History of Anesthesia

The history of anesthetics as we accept the term is in the late 18th century. It begins to kick in with priestly and Humphrey David towards the end of the 18th Century. He was brought up to Bristol to work in the pneumatic institute by Beddos. And on one occasion, he used nitrous oxide which he then called laughing gas because it made his friends giggle. This relieved the pain of his toothache. But what did David do that was interesting? And then why didn't he take it further?
