Is There a Function of Reason in Political Debates?
I live in a society where most of the things that allow me to live and function, I don't even understand. And so I think this aggregation of knowledge is actually a function of reason as understood by Sperbe and Mercier. This should also make you rethink somewhat your view of political discussions or arguments when you see people who only raise up arguments for their side. We get points for having the winning argument, meaning that we get social esteem for being the person who won the day. That may mean it's selfishly in our interest to hold on to false beliefs or to promote an idea further than it should go.
