Worship of one god in one temple might have been expected to produce a uniform religious system. A moral code for relations between man and man was prescribed in the pentateuch with the same divine authority. The appearance of uniformity was deceptive, since jewish interpretations of the pentatuchal laws they shared differ as widely as they do in the multiple denominations of judaism which flourish to day.
