In the early 19th century, in the United States, there just wasn't even remotely enough money to go to serve as a medium of exchange. So everyone just printed off their own. Ben Franklin was one of the pioneers of printing anti-counterfeiting tricks into banknotes for Philadelphia in around 17 late 1720 to 1730. The colonies resolved their problem with paper money from very early on up until the post Civil War period.
