The Cold War and the United States
The united states and the soviet union only exchanged gunfire a handful of times. The stakes of direct confrontation were simply too high to bear. Both countries already had atomic weapons and each was committed to building hydrogen bombs that could kill tens of millions of people at once. United states would not attempt to roll back communism only stop its expansion. But containment didn't necessarily mean peace.
