The Tyranny of Merit
The Tyranny of Merit is a critique of meritocracy. Social mobility has stalled in the United States, it's harder to rise from poverty to relative affluence than many European countries and Canada. A perfectly meritocratic society would not be a just society, nor would it be a good society. It cultivates attitudes towards success and failure that lead those who land on top to believe their success is their own doing,. The anger at elites looking down was directed to elites across the political spectrum.
