I don't expect there to be life, intelligent life across the entire planet. But all it requires is a single nucleation point if the intelligent life is then able to modify its environment. I do believe almost to the fact of quasi-theological conviction, not by you, Peter, but by many people in the SETI game, that this is nearly inevitable. And that's exactly what Carl Sagan meant when he wrote with Andrew Ian: "If there is no other intelligent life"
