The Pursuit of Happiness
Donna Brazile: The word nuance is a hugely important word in understanding the Declaration of Independence. When property was changed with something more amorphous like the pursuit of happiness, that was seen as a victory for those opposed to slavery. She says abolitionists could use the Declaration and Frederick Douglass used it too. "It becomes this sort of touchstone for morality and change that America created in 1777"
