The Importance of Lacan in Freud and Psychoanalysis
Freud was really loath to extend psychoanalysis to social problems and the socio-cultural questions. Lacan's interest is always with how that individual psyche relates to the larger social structure so for me that's what made Lacan you know vitally important. Because of Lacan sort of ground psychoanalysis and structural linguistics, because language is inherently social Lacan takes psychoanalysis to that social level where Freud really focused on the individual level.
