Hello and welcome back to Beyond Survival, the new teacher podcast. My name is Jamie Tom. It's great to have you with us. Today's episode is one I've been looking forward to for a long time. I finally managed to rope one of my wonderful old colleagues, Ollie Cook, into coming on to the podcast. experienced teacher with over 20 years experience in education. He's currently working as a pupil support leader in Tyne Castle High School and having worked alongside him I know how wonderful he is at that role. And today we're going to do what we've called a guide to relational behavior management. So over the next 40 minutes we'll be unpicking what does relational behaviour management mean, how do you apply in the classroom and hopefully giving you some practical tips to support your work with young people. Oli,
Speaker 1
welcome to the podcast, how are you doing? Thanks Jamie, thanks for that introduction, very kind. I have slightly less than 20 years experience but have been in Scottish education for more than 20 years including my student days. Let's
Speaker 2
round it up Ollie, it's always good to
Speaker 1
round it up isn't it?

And modest as well listeners, so brilliant stuff. All right Ollie, in terms of that almost 20 years experience in Scottish education, would you mind just giving listeners just a bit of an overview about your experience in schools? Yeah yeah
Speaker 1
so I guess just to bring that in yeah I was in school in Scotland in the highlands of Scotland and left to do a biomedical degree worked as a transfusion and immunohematologist at Aberdeen's Royal Infirmary for a few years before leaving to do teacher training at Aberdeen. I did my probation year on the Western Isles, Nicholson Institute in Stornoway. So that was me doing my first year as a chemistry teacher and then got my first post back in Edinburgh at Leith Academy. I was there for about five or six years and then moved to Tyne Castle, take up this people support role. So that's a bit of a whistle stop, which is really to say there's lots there. I think they've got lots of lenses in terms of Scottish education. I also have two boys who are one P7 and one S3, so at different stages through the system.
